Newsletter 3.7.21 - Music Shapes Our World

When you think of music, what feelings come to mind? When the bass drops and those vibrations run through your body. When the harmonies burst and your chest explodes with sensation. That is what music is about. One of the most ubiquitous and powerful industries across the globe is the music industry, for it holds much power over our emotions and influences our world perspective. Think of culture and how languages, instruments, and beliefs influence the tone and melody that is produced. Music even has ties in religion and the various meanings and attributes that reach out to the hearts of millions.

Some of the largest names in pop culture today are Beyonce, Ariana Grande, Travis Scott, Carrie Underwood, Bad Bunny, etc. Why do we think of these people when we think of music? It’s because the outreach of music has found its way into our homes, our cars, our cellphones. Apps such as Spotify, Apple Music, Soundcloud, Pandora, etc. generate income from providing that service that we all so desire. Entertainment and joy derived from the melodious combination of tones and sounds serves as the perfect hinge to gain our attention and make money from our interest. In terms of the industry, though the artist tends to be the face, numerous job opportunities arise from all different areas. A “pop star” requires a publicist, a manager, a label, and stylists who aid in creating an image. One of the absolute most pivotal aspects of this industry is the marketing that goes into it. Many find the fame and money in being an artist as the most glamorous aspect, however this tends to overshadow the importance of image. An artist’s brand builds his/her company and his/her sales. A lesson in business: branding is everything!!

Once again turning away from the business aspect of the music industry, let’s remember the passion, creativity, and talent that goes into writing and producing art. To sing, build chords and put in beats that evoke those sensations in others is no easy task. The elation in your chest when a song truly speaks to you came from someone who understood those emotions and translated them into one of the world’s most pure love languages - music!
